ECU Student Wins National Fellowship
Established in 1932, the Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship Program awards 52 fellowships of $8,000 each annually for postgraduate study at accredited institutions. The awards are competitive and fund the first year of graduate study for each recipient. Each chapter selects a winner to compete for these national awards. National winners also receive a five-year membership in Phi Kappa Phi.
This year, Ms. Samar Singh was chosen as the winner of the ECU graduate fellowship competition. She will receive a $1500 award from our local chapter.
In addition, she was awarded a National Fellowship–the first national winner in the history of the ECU chapter.
Samar Singh was born in India and moved to the North Carolina when she was three years old. She has lived in the state most of her life except for three years spent in Kansas (from ninth to eleventh grade). She graduated high school from Smithfield, NC. Her father is a physician and her mother, a teacher. She has a sister in medical school at ECU, which is one reason she chose to come here. Her interests include travel, reading, watching movies, and spending time with friends and family.
She will graduate from ECU with a degree in Sociology with a Science minor in May of 2003 and will enter medical school at ECU in August 2003. She is a recepient of the Brody School of Medicine Early Assurance Scholarship and the Byrd Scholarship. She is a member of AKD (the Sociology honors society) and an active member in the Honors Program at ECU.
